Get A Free Monthly E-Book With Amazon First Reads
Avid readers, heed the call: free books!
It's no secret that the cost of ebooks is not what it was ten, or even five, years ago. The reason why? Publishers have more control over the price of ebooks than they do the physical copies in retail stores. So, free ebooks that you get to keep are something to celebrate.
Where are these free ebooks found? Amazon Prime. Wild, I know- but even Amazon has freebies.
Each month, Amazon Prime members can choose 1 (or sometimes 2) free books to download from their Kindle First Reads program.
What is the Kindle First Reads Program
Kindle First Reads gives Prime members access to upcoming books before they are published. The books come from a variety of popular genres. It’s like getting an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) from a publisher in digital format and straight from Amazon. A team of in-house editors selects the monthly offerings from different genres and publishing houses.
As a Prime member, you can download and keep one of these books for free. Non-members can choose one of these unpublished books for $1.99, roughly half the price it would sell for digitally (give or take, depending on the book).
How to Get Free Books from Amazon Kindle First Reads
Head to Amazon to get your free book from the Kindle First Reads program!
Here's how to find First Reads on your desktop device:
Open Amazon on your computer.
Select the three lines in the top left-hand corner of the screen to open a drop-down menu.
Select "Kindle E-readers & Books" under the Digital Content & Devices section.
Click on "Kindle Books" directly beneath the Kindle Store menu section.
There's a selection of links at the top of the next page that opens. Find the "Amazon First Reads" link and click it.
Top tip: Wait til later in the month to get your free book. Don't get it right when the new month rolls around. The longer you wait to redeem, the more likely other people will read and review books you’re considering. If you’re like me, having those extra reviews helps you choose the right book.
Amazon First Reads for Non-Prime Members
Amazon allows customers without Prime membership to purchase these books for $1.99. But that's not the only way Non-Prime members can take advantage of this deal. Non-Prime Members can get free books by signing up for a 30-day free trial. The books are yours to keep- even after you cancel your membership.
Read for Free with Amazon Prime Reading
Amazon Prime members can read other books for free, too, with Prime Reading, but you won’t get to keep these. It’s like Prime Video- you can “stream” on demand, but you don’t the titles.
Think of it like going to the library or using the Libby app- other than it’s part of your Prime Membership fees.
Prime Reading is not the same as Kindle Unlimited (KU). KU is an additional fee to join.
What Books are Available This Month (February 2025)
There are nine books to choose from for February 2025. Technically.
You can select one of eight books, plus a bonus short read! The bonus short-read book is available for Prime members to get alongside one of the other books! So, you get two books.
Here are the categories from Amazon and their offerings for this month:
Bonus Short Read: The Fall Risk by Abby Jimenez
Police Procedural: Mr. Whisper by Andrew Mayne
Women’s Fiction: Not Quite by the Book by Julie Hatcher
Psychological Thriller: Grave Water Lake by A. M. Strong and Sonya Sargent
Coming of Age: Something Like Fate by Amy Lea
Action: Missing in Flight by Audrey J. Cole
Romance: Unlikely Story by Ali Rosen
Gothic: The Warbler by Sarah Beth Durst
Suspense: Name Not Taken by Madeleine Henry
Quick aside- but when did Women’s Fiction become a genre? Seems absolutely ridiculous to me. It’s a romance novel. Just call it romance. Come on, Amazon. Their genres in general are a little strange in my opinion. But I digress.
Final Thoughts on First Reads
It’s not too late to snag your February free book from Amazon First Reads! On the contrary, now is the perfect time to get it! There are thousands of reviews for each title, helping you choose the best next free ebook for you.
